Ashley T. Cole (NYB) Quotes
Timothy Hills, winning trainer of Kharafa (No. 1): "I had been watching the races and it seemed like pace wasn't holding up. I started to tell that to Javier [Castellano], but I didn't think it was possible for him to take him back [off the lead]. He said, 'You know, this is a good post to just go.' And I said, 'You know something? He's a good horse. You ride him the way it comes up.' As strong as the horse is, there is no way he'd be able to get him off the pace."
"The Mohawk [$200,000, October 19] will be our next stop. We'll keep him in New York-bred races until there are no more."
Javier Castellano, winning jockey aboard Kharafa (No. 1): "I didn't see much speed the way I handicapped the race. Most of the horses in the race were come-from-behind horses. It worked out perfect because a mile and an eighth on the inner turf on the inside, the rail was good. He was able to relax and get comfortable. In the beginning, he wanted to go right to the lead and I just kept him going nice and easy and put up good fractions. In my mind, I had to be careful of [Lubash]; he's a come-from-behind horse and a really nice horse. That's exactly what happened. I got lucky, my horse took me all the way to the wire. It was close and hard to see the wire. When I passed the wire, I asked Junior [Alvarado, aboard Lubash] what he thought, and he said it was too close to call."
