River Seven Flows to Upset Score in Grey Stakes

TORONTO, October 7 – River Seven, at 7-1, bested five rivals, including the previously unbeaten Uncaptured, the 2-5 choice, in Sunday’s Grade 3, $224,800 Grey Stakes, at Woodbine.

Owned by Tucci Stables and trained by Nick Gonzalez, River Seven, a two-year-old son of Johannesburg, broke his maiden in style, a three-quarter length win in the 1 1/16-mile feature.

River Seven, who survived a claim of foul, came into the Grey off back-to-back runner-up efforts, including a second to Uncaptured in the Vandal Stakes on July 28. The gelding was third in his career bow, also to Uncaptured, on June 30.

Five Iron led the field through moderate fractions, notching a quarter in :24.58 and a half in :48.83, with River Seven and jockey Eurico Rosa da Silva second, keeping close tabs on the pacesetter in the 102nd running of the event.

With the race up for grabs turning for home, River Seven had to contend with Five Iron to his inside and Tesseron to his outside down the lane, but managed to fend them off for the milestone victory in 1:43.98 on the Polytrack.

Tesseron held for second, while Indiano Jones rallied for third.

Uncaptured, who was recently made the 30-1 future book favourite for the 2013 Kentucky Derby, by the Wynn Casino in Las Vegas, finished fifth. He was four-for-four coming into the Grey.

“He broke sharp,” said da Silva, of River Seven. “He was ready. He sat very close to the lead. My horse never stopped kicking in. He’s a very, very nice horse.”

As for the claim of foul, da Silva felt confident his number would remain up.
“It looked like I was clear of the other horse (Uncaptured),” he offered. “But the other rider is doing his job. He needs to do what he needs to do.”

River Seven paid $16.60, $7.80 and $18, combining with Tesseron ($5, $14.50) for a $47.80 exactor. Indiano Jones ($45.20) completed a $389.50 triactor.

Live thoroughbred racing continues Holiday Monday with a first-race post time of 1:05 p.m.
