Quotes from Sycamore (G3)

Danny Peitz (winning trainer of Najjaar)

“I didn’t really know what to expect (after the race was moved from turf to the main track because of rain earlier in the day). The only time he’d run on the Polytrack was in his (third start, in October 2011 at Keeneland). He was a fast-closing second that day. We thought he’d handle it. He’s trained all summer long on it.

“Just working out the trip – I was kinda worried about us being boxed in there and whether he’d get out. He finished well.”

James Graham (winning rider)

“Great trip. Saved all the ground. Rode to instructions perfectly by Danny Peitz (with a laugh). Got through on the inside. He quickened up smartly. (The win was) pretty handy.

“They were drawn outside last time (in which he ran third in the American St. Leger on Aug. 17 at Arlington Park) and couldn’t get really proper cover like today. He needs a target to run at. He got it today, he finished off perfect.”

Joe Rocco Jr. (rider of runner-up Eagle Poise)

“They went extremely slow. From the one hole my horse broke well, kinda was behind and then got a little eager as slow as they were going. It was a weirdly run race, with them going so slow up front and the way everything happened. So we were lucky to find a seam, and he was able to run on a little bit. We turned for home, and he switched leads and kicked strong for me and really followed out to the wire. The other horse just had a little bit more of a punch.”

Rosie Napravnik (rider of third-place finisher Tricky Hat [CHI])

“He ran good. He’s kind of a funny little horse, a grouchy little horse, so I wonder if he hung a little in between horses there at the end. I had a good trip. We went pretty slow, and he’s the kind of horse you have to keep his attention the whole way.”
