Quotes for the $1 million Filly & Mare Sprint
Rajiv Maragh (jockey, Groupie Doll, 1st) – “It set up just like last year. Good trip and when we got to the quarter pole, I was like ‘Whew, we’re passing horses.’ And I haven’t even asked her yet. She ran great.”
Luis Saez (jockey, Judy the Beauty, 2nd) – “Fifteen minutes before the race, the (assistant) trainer asked me if I could ride (in place of the injured John Velazquez). I had never been on her before. He told me to get good position. She doesn’t like to run inside but (Rajiv) Maragh (on winner Groupie Doll) kept me inside. I came flying but it was too late.”
Blake Heap (serving as assistant to trainer Wesley Ward, Judy the Beauty, 2nd) – “When it rains, it rains. We lost our jock (John Velazquez, who was injured earlier in the card) and this rider (Luis Saez) didn’t know her. This filly doesn’t want to be down inside. When Groupie Doll came up outside her, she got intimidated and started to back off. When he took her around and outside again, she re-fired.”
Kiaran McLaughlin (trainer, Dance Card, 3rd) – “She had to go a little bit wide, but she ran great to two very good fillies. You’re never just really happy when you run third, but we lost to a true champion. A special filly won it and we’re happy that we’re back along with the Grade I fillies. She ran very well.”
Joel Rosario (jockey, Dance Card, 3rd) – “I broke a little slow. She tried hard and gave me everything she could. I think she would have been a little closer if she broke a little better. She ran great down the lane, but she hung.
Javier Castellano (jockey, Summer Applause, 4th) – “She ran very well. She doesn’t have the speed that those top two or three horses had, so we just settled back and let her make one run. She had a very good trip and she ran her race.”
