Sharp Cat Stakes Quotes

Jockey Quotes

COREY NAKATANI, ARETHUSA, Winner: "She ran a big race. When Eoin (Harty) asked me to ride, he told me she's by A.P. Indy and would get the distance. I said, ‘Perfect, let's go get the money, boss.' My main thing was to just get her into a rhythm and she would take me at them. And that's what happened. Any time you can win a race like that with a 2-year-old filly, the future looks bright."

MARTIN GARCIA, BE PROUD, Second: "I thought I was going to be on an easy lead, but (Edwin Maldonado on Pleasant Miss) kept sending and kissing and whipping. She's one of those horses that gets the bit and just wants to take off."

RAFAEL BEJARANO, GEORGIA, Fifth: "She might have bled because I was completely out of horse at the half-mile.’’
Trainer Quotes

EOIN HARTY, ARETHUSA, Winner: "I knew the distance would be no problem. I had two maidens nominated (Afsana). I worked them (Nov. 11) and decided I'd run this one and not (Afsana). The other one runs (Nov. 22) against maidens. Arethusa has improved every race. She's a super mover and she's trained here basically all of her career. I knew she wouldn't get tired. I thought they'd go fast enough and I'd hoped she could be third. Black type for a 2-year-old A.P. Indy filly is huge. We'll definitely look at the (Grade I, $500,000-guaranteed Hollywood) Starlet (Dec. 7) now."

MIKE MARLOW (Asst. to Bob Baffert), BE PROUD (Second) and GEORGIA (Fifth): "(Bejarano) said (Georgia) felt physically good, but she just never got going. When Pleasant Miss came up to Be Proud, my filly just wouldn't relax and got real strong. But I think she was going to get beat anyway. The winner went by us really easy."

Notes: Harty, who also won in 2008 with Pamona Ball, is the second trainer to win the Sharp Cat twice, joining David Hofmans who won the first two runnings with Balance (2005) and Runway Rosie (2006)…Arethusa’s win price ($23) and margin of victory (8 ¼ lengths) are Sharp Cat records.
