Miss Besilu Breaks Maiden

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL - After watching Miss Besilu, a $2.9 million weanling purchase, break her maiden in Saturday's first race for owner Besilu Stables, owner Ken Ramsey shouted from the top of the scale house to winning assistant trainer Kenny McCarthy, "Kenny, I got outbid for that one."

Making her second start after a sixth-place finish on the dirt at Belmont Park Oct. 27, Miss Besilu went to the front in a field of 14 2-year-olds and cruised to a 2 1/4-length victory while covering a firm 1 1/16 turf course in 1:47.66.

Under jockey Jose Lezcano, Miss Besilu had an uneventful trip. "She broke very cleanly away from there, put herself out there (in front) very easily and no one really wanted to take her on," McCarthy said. "Jose said, 'Perfect.' "

When asked if he was surprised by the slow pace (:25.04, :53.09, 1:18.28), McCarthy said, "I think you're never really surprised anymore, but I was certainly happy to see them."
