Gulfstream Today - 12-15-12
Lead: Joseph Witek’s 3-year-old Kentucky homebred colt Tiz Sardonic Joe stalked the pace set by Claiborne Farm’s 13-to-10 favorite Console from the start in Saturday’s seventh race optional/allowance test at Gulfstream Park, took command nearing the stretch, and held on for a hard-fought head victory over NYKY Thoroughbred Stable's Which Market in the one-mile turf test.
“The jock said the soft ground seemed to help,” said Kenneally. “He’s an improving horse and was able to relax behind the favorite. The horse that won the race in his last start (Keep Up) won a stakes in his next start, and this horse hopefully is headed that way too.”
Tiz Sardonic Joe is a half-brother to Witek-owned and bred 4-year-old Joes Blazing Aaron, winner of the Palm Beach Stakes (G3) here in 2011 and a close-up fourth as the favorite in a strong allowance test here last Saturday for Kenneally.
Who’s Hot: Jockey Luca Panici posted his first two victories of the meet with scores on Jairam Investments’ Sailing Clear in the first race to pay $12 and Rose Family Stable’s Joanie’s Image, lighting up the board in the eighth race for a $109.40 win mutual.
Work of the Day: Peter Kelly’s 3-year-old gelding Hobbs worked a half-mile in 48 flat Saturday morning at Gulfstream Park for trainer Kathy Mongeon as he prepares for a possible start in next Saturday’s $75,000 El Prado Stakes at one mile on turf.
Claimed for $50,000 at Saratoga in late August, the son of Put It Back has made two starts since then for the new connections, finishing second in a turf allowance at Belmont Park on Oct. 25 and scoring a neck victory in the $80,000 Montserrat Stakes over the Aqueduct course last out on Nov. 4.
