Gulfstream Today - 12-16-12
Lead: Expectations were high for Joyce B. Young’s 2-year-old homebred filly Caroline Thomas as the 9-to-10 favorite in Sunday’s sixth race allowance test, and she more than lived up to the challenge, splitting horses nearing the stretch and going on to score by a length over Eclipse Thoroughbreds’ pacesetter Miss Lucky Sevens in the 1 1/16 miles turf test.
“I’m just glad he was on her,” said Tagg of Castellano after the race. “He rode her in her first race when she was second (Belmont Park on Sept. 16). It’s uncanny how he stays calm and cool until he finds the right spot to get clear. Her dam (Bit of Whimsy) was a Grade 1 winner and we hope this filly will be a stakes horse too, which probably will be the next step for her.”
Caroline Thomas broke her maiden in her second start at Aqueduct on Nov. 4 before shipping south to Tagg’s winter headquarters at Palm Meadows. She is the first foal out of Bit of Whimsy, winner of the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup (G1) at Keeneland and other stakes for the same owner-breeders and Tagg.
Caroline Thomas paid $3.80 for $2 as she was timed in 1:39:66 over the ‘firm’ course. Lee Lewis’ Casual Elegance finished third in the field of nine, 3 ¾ lengths behind the runner-up.
Who’s Hot: Jockey Javier Castellano got off to a fast start Sunday guiding favorite Whatsnottolike to a dead-heat victory in the first race and D’Pepjo to score in the third He followed up with a third trip to the winners’ circle aboard heavy favorite Caroline Thomas in the sixth race allowance..
Work of the Day: Stipa Racing Stable’s 3-year-old Reveron breezed an easy five furlongs in 1:03 4/5 Sunday morning at Calder for trainer Agustin Bezara as he continues preparation for his first start since finishing a game second by a length behind Take Charge Indy in the $1 million Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream on Mar. 31 this year. A son of Songandaprayer, Reveron began the season winning the Gulfstream Park Derby on New Year’s Day.
