CARLOS MONTALVO NAMED HILTON GARDEN INN JOCKEY OF THE MONTH
Carlos Montalvo has been named the Hilton Garden Inn Jockey of the Month following an extremely successful first half of the 2008-2009 racing season at Tampa Bay Downs. The reinsman has haltered 29 wins, 22 seconds and 23 third place finishes from 164 starts for $370,871 in purses earned through 40 days of racing, making him the fourth leading rider overall at the Oldsmar oval.
One of the highlights of Montalvo’s meet thus far has been his victory in this year’s running of the Gasparilla Stakes, in which he guided Will Farish and Mrs. William S. Kilroy’s homebred Rock Candy to the Winner’s Circle for trainer Michael Zwiesler. Montalvo will have the call to ride the three-year-old Mineshaft filly in February 14’s $75,000 Suncoast Stakes, a major prep for March 14’s Grade III $200,000 Florida Oaks, which leads to May 1’s Grade I Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs.
Carlos Montalvo was born on November 10, 1978 in Mexico City, Mexico, and began riding there at age 18. The very first horse he rode in a race was his first winner. The horse was aptly named Irun, and since then Carlos Montalvo has kept up his winning ways: he finished the 2007-2008 Tampa Bay Downs racing season as sixth leading rider; furthermore, Montalvo is ranked 34th among the nation’s leading jockeys, only two places below this year’s Eclipse-award winning rider Edgar Prado.
Montalvo lives in Oldsmar, and his family includes his parents and his sister Fatima. During the Tampa Bay Downs off-season, he is a reinsman at both Hawthorne Racecourse in Chicago, IL and Calder Race Course in Miami. When he’s not in the irons, Montalvo is a dedicated dancer and says that he can’t pick a favorite dance. He says that he loves riding here because, among many reasons, “it’s just great to be here, especially in the winter when my friends up north are freezing!”
Racing resumes tomorrow, February 14 with a twelve race card; there is a Pick 6 carryover of $33,783.63. The Silks Poker Room is open daily from 12:30 PM through 12:30 AM, and The Downs Golf Practice Facility is open on Mondays from 10:00 AM through 10:00 PM and on Tuesdays through Sundays from 8:30 AM through 10:00 PM.
