A LITTLE GEM NEVER HEADED IN MONMOUTH FEATURE

OCEANPORT, N.J. * Martin L. Cherry’s A Little Gem reaffirmed her love of the Monmouth Park racing strip Thursday as she cruised to a nearly seven-length victory in the $41,000 allowance feature.

The winner, trained by Eddie Plesa Jr. and ridden by Pablo Fragoso, maintained her perfect record over the track with her third score here in as many tries.
A Little Gem, who won the Sorority Stakes here last year, set all the pace and completed the six furlongs over a sloppy track in 1:10 1/5. She paid a surprising $18.20, $7.20 and $3.60 across the board as the longest shot in the field of six fillies.

New York City Girl finished second, two and a quarter lengths ahead of One Smart Devil to complete the $62.20 exacta, paying $3.60 to place and $2.60 to show. One Smart Devil returned $2.60 to show.

A Little Gem, a 3-year-old daughter of Yonaguska, was making her first start since January today, but had worked sharply for Plesa, who took over her training earlier this year.

Last year, A Little Gem broke her maiden here in August, and then won the Sorority Stakes a month later.
