Al Maktoum Round I Challenge - Trends
The first Al Maktoum Challenge Round I was run in 1994 and was won by Red Rainbow, trained by Dhruba Selvaratnam and ridden by John Murtagh.
Godolphin’s Saeed bin Suroor has trained the most winners of this race, seven in total, while Lanfranco Dettori is the most successful jockey with four wins.
Imperialista (Brazil) in 2007
Happy Boy (Brazil) in 2008
Gloria de Campeão (France) in 2010.
The most successful age group is four with nine wins.
No horse has ever have won this race twice – China Visit was beaten a nose in 2002 when seeking the double. Gloria de Campeão was 2nd in 2009 before winning in 2010 while Wathik was 2nd in 1996 and 3rd in 1997 before winning in 1998.
State Shinto, winner of this race in 2004 when eight, would enter the record books as the oldest winner, with 2006’s winner Blatant a year younger when he won.
The fastest time for the race at Meydan Racecourse was recorded last year with Mendip who ran in 1:36:45.
