LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Feb. 12, 2009) – Fans of Churchill Downs’ Kentucky Derby Future Wager (“KDFW”) have made the mutuel field, or “all others,” the favored betting interest in the opening pool of the bet every year since its introduction in 1999. They appear in no mood to alter that pattern in the first of three 2009 Derby Future pools.

The “all others” betting interest, which includes all 3-year-old Thoroughbreds other than the 23 individual horses listed on the KDFW Pool 1 wagering roster, was a strong favorite from the opening seconds of the four-day pool and was an odds-on fan’s choice at 4-5 when Thursday’s wagering concluded at 10 p.m. (all times EST) on Thursday. Total betting on the first day of the Feb. 12-15 pool was $48,207, which reflected a solid increase over 2008’s opening day betting of $30,351.

The mutuel field was a heavy favorite virtually from the instant the betting windows opened at noon for KDFW Pool 1 as $6,000 in early wagers on “all others” poured in and knocked odds on the wagering interest down to 1-9. By the end of the day $22,393 of the pool’s opening day total betting had been wagered on “all others.”

Fox Hill Farm’s Old Fashioned, the Larry Jones-trained winner of the Remsen (Grade II), ended first-day Pool 1 betting as the favored individual horse at 12-1. Robert B. Lewis (GII) winner Pioneerof the Nile was next at 15-1, while San Rafael (GII) winner The Pamplemousse stood at 18-1. Stardom Bound, the 2-year-old filly champion of 2008 and the lone female on the Pool 1 roster, was a 19-1 risk Vineyard Haven, 12-1 in Mike Battaglia’s morning line odds, rose to 43-1 after a distant fourth-place finish to stablemates Desert Party and Regal Ransom, both members of the mutuel field, in Thursday’s UAE 2000 Guineas at Nad Al Sheba in Dubai.

Betting on Pool 1 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager is scheduled to resume at noon on Friday, Feb. 13. Wagering on the four-day pool will conclude at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 15. Winning payouts in KDFW Pool 1 will be based that are in place at the conclusion of betting on Sunday.

The Kentucky Derby Future Wager offers racing fans the opportunity to bet on contenders for the $2 million guaranteed Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (GI) at odds that could be much higher than those they would receive on May 2, the day of America’s greatest race. It is a minimum $2 wager and a win bet only.
