All Smiles Springs Upset In Nellie Morse Stakes

LAUREL, MD. 1-24-09---Cynthia McGinnes’ All Smiles ran down 2-5 favorite Fascinatin’ Rhythm to capture the $50,000 Nellie Morse Stakes, today’s feature race at Laurel Park. The Nellie Morse Stakes was the first leg of the Magna 5, a $1 national pick 5 wager conducted at Magna Entertainment racetracks from coast-to-coast.

Sent to post at 19-1, the longest price in the field of seven, All Smiles carried jockey Dale Beckner for trainer Fran Campitelli. The daughter of Awesome Again settled comfortably into fifth place in the one turn, one mile event, while tracking odds-on favorite Fascinatin’ Rhythm into the stretch. She moved outside of the favorite, fought her tooth and nail the rest of the way and won by a neck. Irvs Pick finished third.

All Smiles, who completed the distance in 1:37.83, paid $41.20. The exacta paid $76 and the triple returned $268.20.

“He (trainer Campitelli) told me don’t let her fall to far out of it, just keep her off the pace and it worked out,” said Beckner. “She was game. I felt I had a chance. They ran down the lane and she finished up nice.”

“She’s done well,” said Campitelli. “Her running style is to give up ground in the middle of the race and that’s why I told Dale, wherever you are early, just try to stay there. You can’t give them four or five lengths down the backside and then make it up. He did a great job. We kind of babied her a little too much earlier and we just trained her a little bit more and she responded well.”
