AMERICAN ACT, DRILL MEET AGAIN IN LAZARO BARRERA MEMORIAL
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (May 9, 2012)—American Act will try for his second stakes win of the Spring/Summer meet when he takes on three other 3-year-olds in the $100,000 Lazaro Barrera Memorial Saturday at Betfair Hollywood Park.
A Grade III at seven furlongs over Cushion Track, the Barrera is the third of nine races. Post time is 1 p.m. Track gates open at 9:55 a.m. for simulcasts.
Straightened away in the stretch, the gelded son of Quiet American and the Boston Harbor mare Revolutionary Act rallied determinedly on the far outside to prevail by a nose as the even-money favorite.
Scheduled for six furlongs on turf, the opening day Henson was transferred to the main track due to rain earlier in the day.
Bred in Kentucky by Camelia Casby, American Act has won twice in six starts and earned $116,360.
In search of his first win in the Barrera, Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert will send out a pair – Drill and Gun Boat.
Owned by Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman, Drill, a son of Lawyer Ron and the Storm Cat mare Cat Dancer, is back from Arkansas after finishing second as the 3-5 favorite in the Northern Spur Stakes April 14 at Oaklawn Park.
The winner of the Grade I Del Mar Futurity in 2011, Drill is 3-for-10 overall with earnings of $359,710. His last victory was at the Barrera distance when he defeated American Act by a nose in the Grade II San Vicente Stakes April 19 at Santa Anita.
A son of Congrats and the Vigors mare White Ruffle, Gun Boat has one win in three starts for owners George Bolton and Fog City Stable. The dark bay won at first asking last Aug. 6 at Del Mar, then was fourth – one length behind Drill – in the Del Mar Futurity.
In his first start as a 3-year-old, Gun Boat was second as the 7-10 favorite in an optional claimer April 22 at Santa Anita. He’s earned $64,400.
Trained by Gary Mandella for Sweet Sophia Inc., Boompa won at nearly 11-1 in his debut April 7 at Santa Anita. A son of Include and the Unreal Zeal mare Desviacion, Boompa defeated next out winner Designer by a nose and earned $33,600.
