ARUNA, CAMBINA, NEREID AMONG GAMELY NOMINEES
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (May 18, 2012)—Cambina and Nereid, who finished in a dead heat in the 2011 American Oaks, are among 15 nominees to the $250,000 Gamely Stakes.
The first Grade I of the Spring/Summer meet at Betfair Hollywood Park, the Gamely, which is for fillies and mares at 1 1/8 miles on turf, will be run for the 44th time Monday, May 28.
Fourth in her comeback race in the Grade III Wilshire Handicap April 29, Nereid has won three of four starts over the Betfair Hollywood Park grass. Owned by Eric Kronfeld and trained by John Shirreffs, the 4-year-old Rock Hard Ten filly is 3-for-7 lifetime with earnings of $244,800.
Cambina and Nereid aren’t the only Grade I winners among the noms. Aruna, who took the Spinster over Keeneland’s Polytrack last Oct. 9, could make her first California appearance.
Owned by breeder Flaxman Holdings Ltd. and trained by Graham Motion, the 5-year-old Mr. Greeley mare has won six of 14 and earned $825,379. Five of her victories have come on turf.
Motion, who also nominated Pachattack, the winner of last month’s Grade III Doubledogdare at Keeneland, has had success in recent years shipping to Betfair Hollywood Park for Grade I races. Gypsy’s Warning won the 2010 Matriarch and Sanagas was victorious in the Hollywood Turf Cup last Nov. 19.
Trainer Simon Callaghan, who won the 2011 Gamely with Dubawi Heights, nominated Belle Royale, a first out winner in the United States April 7 at Santa Anita, and Camelia Rose, who is owned by J. Paul Reddam.
The remaining Gamely nominations: All Star Heart, Bauble Queen, Calle Vista, Capital Plan, City to City, Lasso From El Paso, Quiet Oasis, Up In Time and Wild Mia.
The Memorial Day weekend at Betfair Hollywood Park will include two other graded races – the Grade II, $150,000 American Handicap and the Grade III, $100,000 Los Angeles Handicap.
Run at one mile on turf, the American attracted 25 nominations, including Mr. Commons, Compari, Jeranimo, Liberian Freighter and Willyconker. It will be run Saturday, May 26.
Like the Gamely, the Los Angeles, which is at six furlongs over Cushion Track, will be run May 28. The 15 nominees include defending champion Camp Victory, 2009 Hollywood Gold Cup winner Rail Trip, the Bonde-trained duo of Smiling Tiger and Sway Away, Bench Points and Majestic City.
Entries for the American will be taken Wednesday, May 23. Entries for the Gamely and Los Angeles will be taken Friday, May 25.
