Asmussen Breaks His Own Single-Year Record for Training Wins in North America

Trainer Steve Asmussen broke his own single-year record for North American wins by a trainer, when Prophesy captured the first race today at Remington Park in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The win was Asmussen's 556th of the year, breaking his old mark of 555 set in 2004.

Quotes from Steve Asmussen:

"We've had a tremendous year, made possible by some tremendous opportunities and my outstanding help."

(On the accomplishment of winning with everything from Grade I stakes performers to claimers): "It's had a lot to do with my background. The success we've had with the Curlins and the Pyros has been fantastic. But we came from a small, midwestern track, and I like to think that we remember where we came from."

(on watching the record-setting race via a feed that he did not realize was on tape-delay) "I was watching the race, and my wife called to congratulate me. I said, '"They're at the half-mile pole!'"

(on possibility of becoming first to win 600 races in a year) "Churchill closes this week and Woodbine and Remington are right behind them, so there aren't a lot of opportunities (remaining). Five-ninety, maybe."

(will this be the last time he breaks the record?) "Definitely."
