AT 10-1, REMARKABLE REMY ROCKS PEBBLES
An overlooked Remarkable Remy saved her best running for last, gaining the lead with less than a furlong to go and pulling clear to a one-length victory over Senior Rita Lady in Monday’s $121,000 Pebbles Stakes, the Columbus Day feature at Belmont Park.
Under jockey Ramon Dominguez, the daughter of Hennessy was 10th through the early going as Fareena took the field of 12 three-year-old fillies through fractions of 24.45, 48.34 and 1:12.11 over the firm turf course. Rounding the turn, Dominguez angled her to the outside and she responded with a rousing late run that carried to the wire in 1:35.65.
Senior Rita Lady was a nose in front of Meriweather Jessica, who in turn was followed by Blitzen Too, favored Mousse au Chocolat, Fareena, Venetian Causeway, Mikeslittlegirl, Sales Tax, Zee Zee, Very Distinctive, and Saki to Me.
The victory was the third in seven starts this year for Remarkable Remy, who had defeated Mousse au Chocolat at Saratoga on Aug. 31. Owned by Live Oak Plantation, Remarkable Remy earned $72,600 to boost her bankroll to $272,100. She returned $22 for a $2 win bet.
“She’s gotten to be a pretty nice filly,” said winning trainer John Kimmel. “When he (Dominguez) asked her, she was all there for him. We will run her again at Aqueduct, then put her on the shelf, and try her next year.”
