ATONED SNAPS WINLESS STREAK IN GRADE 3 PEGASUS
East Rutherford, NJ [Oct. 24, 2008] - Dogwood Stable's Atoned [$17.80, $8.00, $9.00] finally put his winless streak to rest in the $200,000 Grade 3 Pegasus Stakes on Friday night at the Meadowlands.
Atoned and jockey Chris DeCarlo waited patiently as Pluracity and Coal Play led the field to the three-quarter marker in 1:10.74. DeCarlo moved Atoned three-wide entering the stretch and he held off Ready Set [$9.60, $5.20] by a nose in 1:49.4, in the mile and an eighth event. Truth Rules [$2.20], one of two entrants for Nick Zito, soared from last to third.
"He's been running second in a lot of races," DeCarlo said. "In the Haskell [finished sixth], I believe they tried to keep him closer to the pace and he's generally a one run horse. There were some restrictions I had today, letting him settle back and make a run with him. I started asking him past the three-eighths pole and he started picking it up pretty good. He has a tendency to wait on horses a little bit, so when we needed the lead at the three-sixteenths pole he kind of idled. He didn't completely pull up, but he idled a little bit and I was lucky at the wire ending up where I was. Racing luck has something to do with it, too."
A $165,000 2-year-old purchase, Atoned is by Repent from the Icecapade mare Amidst.
Earlier in the night, Blue Sailor [$18, $6.20, $4.60] increased his winning streak to three races in the $60,000 Thomas Edison Stakes for turf sprinters. Ridden by Harry Vega, Blue Sailor took command out of the gate and held on for a length victory over Smart Enough [$2.80, $2.20] in a swift 55.01. Remain Silent [$4.60] rallied between rivals to grab the show spot.
"That's his natural speed and I was surprised I was in front," Vegas said. "I was never sure [that I had it], but he got there and that's the main thing. I think he just set a track record in Maryland as well. He can go that fast; he can really go."
Blue Sailor improved his record to 10 wins in 29 career starts and boosted his bankroll to $211,086. Howard Wolfendale trains the 4-year-old gelded son of Northern Afleet-Tropical Rumor [Blue Ensign] for owners Robert Gorsuch, Robert Kreis and Raymond Makarovich Jr.
