Beloveda Fires First in Tropical Starter Series

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (September 2, 2012) – Miller Racing, LLC’s Beloveda won the opening leg of the Tropical Starter Series fillies and mares division at Calder Casino & Race Course on Saturday, running by Flying Trip in the final yards of the 6 ½-furlong dash to prevail for trainer Marty Wolfson.

With the victory, Beloveda earned the winner’s share of the rich $50,000 purse along with six points in the Starter Series standings, which puts the graded-stakes placed daughter of Ghostzapper atop the table after one event. Upon completion of the series, the trainer of the horse with the most points will receive a $5,000 bonus.

Flying Trip, conditioned by Gilberto Zerpa, garnered five points for her second-place finish while the Joe Calascibetta-trained Gob Smacked snagged four points when crossing the wire third. Points were also awarded to the fourth, fifth, and sixth-place finishers Cool Vixen, who netted three points; Exclusively Maria who banked two; and Canaima, a one point earner.

Beloveda is a four-time winner in six starts at Calder this year, and boasts six wins from 10 starts in 2012. The filly also shows a second-place performance in the Grade 3 Rampart Stakes at Gulfstream Park in late March.

The Tropical Starter Series fillies and mares division continues on September 22 at 7 ½ furlongs on turf before concluding over one mile of dirt on October 20.

The Tropical Starter Series open division, which drew 62 nominations, will begin September 8 with a 6 ½-furlong main track dash, followed by a 7 ½-furlong turf heat on September 29 and a one mile dirt affair October 27.

SAEZ WINS FOUR ON OPENING DAY OF TROPICAL MEET

Luis Saez, the 2011 Tropical title holder and runaway leading rider at the recently concluded Calder Meet when crowned that meet’s champion for the third straight time, wasted little time shooting to the top of the 2012 Tropical Meet jockey table after just one day of racing, starting the season with a four-win day while tallying those triumphs in succession.

Saez notched the first of his four wins with Fortunate Bill for trainer Luis Ramirez in race seven. The Panama native returned to win race eight with Blues and Silvers for Kirk Ziadie, the ninth-race Darn That Alarm Handicap with Cash Rules for Dave Fawkes, and the race 10 Starter Series heat aboard Beloveda.

Calder Meet leading owner Frank Calabrese was a two-time winner Saturday, enjoying victories with the previously mentioned Fortunate Bill and Blues and Silvers, both ridden by Saez.

SPECIAL MONDAY CARD AT CALDER

Calder will host a special afternoon of live racing on Monday in observance of the Labor Day holiday. First race post time for the nine-race card is 12:30 p.m.

The feature race on the program is the $55,000 Connie Ann Stakes, a five-furlong turf dash for fillies and mares that was originally drawn for Sunday, August 26, but was abandoned and rescheduled when that day’s races were canceled due to the approach from Tropical Storm Isaac.
