BIG BROWN SIZZLES IN BIG A MOVE

Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown breezed six furlongs in 1:10.86 under exercise rider Michelle Nevin this morning at Aqueduct Racetrack, his best move since returning to training following the June 7 Belmont Stakes.

“Every work since he’s come back has been better than the one before it,” said Michael Sherack, vice-president of IEAH Stables, which owns the son of Boundary with Paul Pompa, Jr. “From everything we’ve been told, from [trainer] Rick [Dutrow], Michelle, the clockers, it was an exceptional move. Michelle didn’t ask him for much of anything and he finished up strong and galloped out strong.”


Big Brown, who was pulled up in the Belmont in his failed quest to become racing’s 12th Triple Crown winner, is scheduled to return to the races Sunday, August 3, in the Haskell Invitational presented by Vonage at Monmouth Park. Sherack said Dutrow had planned on sending the colt to New Jersey a couple of days before the race.

. “With the Haskell eight days out, if the work was a little fast, he’s got plenty of time,” said Sherack. “Rick had talked about sending him down a little early and doing something with him there, but I don’t know if today’s work changed that or not.”

Sherack said the 139th running of the $1 million Travers presented by Shadwell Farm here at Saratoga remained on the radar for Big Brown.

“At this point, we’re taking it one step at a time,” he said. “Sunday’s race will determine what happens.”
