BIG DRAMA SETS TRACK RECORD IN MR. PROSPECTOR
HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Harold Queen’s Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) winner Big Drama kicked off his 5-year-old campaign Saturday at Gulfstream Park with a track-record performance in the $100,000 Mr. Prospector Stakes (G3).
Trained by David Fawkes and ridden by Eibar Coa, Big Drama shook off a challenge from defending Mr. Prospector winner Custom for Carlos at the head of the stretch to win the six-furlong event by four lengths in 1:08.12
Breaking on top leaving the gate from the No. 6 post, Big Drama raced through fractions of :22.12, :44.43 and :56.08 before winning for the 10th time in 17 starts. The homebred son of Montbrook has now earned $2,699,560.
David Fawkes (Big Drama) – “I thought Custom for Carlos would run well today and when a horse of that quality makes a run at you, you have to be a little nervous. But he (Big Drama) showed how good he is. He wasn’t even blowing when he came back. Now we’ll keep our fingers crossed until Monday night (Eclipse champion announcements). The goal for the season is to get back to the Breeders’ Cup (Sprint) at Churchill Downs. In the meantime, it’s one race at a time. It’s possible he could run here again, but he will get some breaks as the season goes along, so we’ll see. We don’t have anything planned for his next start right now.”
Jockey Eibar Coa (Big Drama): “We’ve been very happy with the way he’s been working since he started back from the Breeders’ Cup. He had four good works and the last two were just unbelievable, so we were expecting this kind of race from him today. I knew there was very good competition in the field, but I knew they were really going to have to run to beat him today. He’s not playing right now. When he out-broke those horses inside, and they’re fast horses, I just let him go by himself. That horse (Custom for Carlos) made a good move and got next to me, but it wasn’t enough. I knew Big Drama was going to run fast and good. I’m happy he got the track record. He deserves it. He’s been doing so well.
Jockey Julien Leparoux (Custom for Carlos): “He tried his best, he ran really good. Big Drama is probably the Eclipse Award winner so it’s not a bad horse. He fought pretty good, he just got a little tired. I thought it was an impressive race. Hopefully he stays sound and we got a good horse for this year.”
