BIG SHOW PAYOFFS ABOUND WHEN FAVORED ENTRY RUNS OUT OF THE MONEY
ALBANY -- Crafty Power and Any Wager formed what many thought was an unbeatable entry in the $31,320 feature at Golden Gate Fields Saturday so when neither horse finished in the money the result was predictable - big show payoffs.
There was $121,596 bet into the show pool of the eighth race and $111,673 of that total was wagered on the Jerry Hollendorfer-trained entry of Crafty Power and Any Wager. Crafty Power finished fifth after setting the pace and then fading in the final furlong while Any Wager checked in fourth (beaten a head for third) after unleashing his closing kick too late.
Captain Roy, trained by Bob Hess and ridden by Mario Gutierrez, captured the 1 1/16-mile allowance contest in 1:43.37 and earned $18,000 for owner Roy E. Bishop.
Racing continues at Golden Gate Fields Sunday. Post time is 12:45 p.m.
