BREEDERS’ CUP CLASSIC CALIF. LOTTERY SWEEPSTAKES BEGINS FRIDAY, PRIZES TO TOTAL $230,000

ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct.15, 2009)—As announced this past August by the Oak Tree Racing Association, The Breeders’ Cup Classic Lottery Sweepstakes, where fans can win up to $230,000 in prize money, begins Friday and will be available at http://www.calottery.com, any one of 22,000 Lottery retail locations, or by visiting any operating racetrack or simulcast center in California.

Fans 18-years of age and older can begin participating in this one-of-a-kind promotion on Oct. 16, and may purchase $5 of Hot Spot tickets up until the day of the prestigious $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Oak Tree on Nov. 7.

Players can participate by going to the California Lottery website (http://www.calottery.com), any one of 22,000 Lottery retail locations, or by visiting any operating racetrack or simulcast center in California. With their $5 Hot Spot purchase, players will receive a Quick-Pick of a horse to be entered in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Players will be given a horse name and horse number for the first place finisher in the Classic.

“We’re pleased to team up with Oak Tree Racing and the Breeders’ Cup to offer a product that combines the fun of a Lottery game with the excitement of horse racing,” said Joan Borucki, California Lottery Director.

All players who have matched the winning horse in the Classic will be entered into a drawing whereby 456 winners will share the total prize of $230,000. One lucky winner will receive the top prize of $50,000 and five others will receive $25,000 each.

“We’re delighted that we’ve been able to form this partnership with the Lottery and the Breeders’ Cup,” said Santa Anita Vice President of Marketing Allen Gutterman. “We ran a similar promotion last year, and despite the fact it was conducted on a much smaller scale, over one million people participated. When people realize there is $230,000 in prize money available for this year’s promotion, I think we’re going to see a huge response right away.

“The exposure this brings to horse racing and to the Breeders’ Cup is just tremendous. I think this is going to expose a lot of new people to the sport in a very positive way. We’re elated.”

Oak Tree at Santa Anita will host the two-day Breeders’ Cup World Championships for an unprecedented second consecutive year on Nov. 6 & 7. The Breeders’ Cup Classic is for 3-year-olds and up and will be run over Santa Anita’s Pro Ride synthetic surface at 1 ¼ miles.

“We are very excited about working again with the California Lottery and to build upon the success of their 2008 Breeders’ Cup Lottery game, which had over one million participants,” said Breeders’ Cup President and CEO, Greg Avioli.

Beyond the top two Classic Sweepstakes prizes, 25 fans will win $1,000 each, 175 will win $100 each and 250 players will each receive $50.

Inaugurated in 1984, the Breeders’ Cup World Championships will celebrate its 26th anniversary and will be conducted for the fifth time at Santa Anita’s picturesque Oak Tree meeting. For ticket and reserved seating information, fans are encouraged to go to http://www.oaktreeracing.com, or call (626) 254-1300.

Opening day for Oak Tree’s 41st season is Wednesday, Sept. 30. First post time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
