BSHARPSONATA RALLIES UNDER GOMEZ IN PLAYA DEL REY

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (Nov. 27, 2008) — Bsharpsonata, fifth on the rail with a quarter-mile to run under Garrett Gomez, split horses approaching the sixteenth pole and cruised to a 1 1/2-length victory over favorite Peppermint Lounge in the $68,400 Playa del Rey on Thursday at Hollywood Park.

The daughter of Pulpit, overlooked in wagering at 7-1 despite competing with the nation’s leading 3-year-old fillies in the spring, covered six furlongs on Cushion Track in a stakes record 1:07.95 for her seventh win in 12 starts.

Bsharpsonata, trained by Todd Pletcher, was making her first start since finishing eighth in the Black-Eyed Susan at Pimlico in May. Winner of a pair of graded stakes earlier in the year at Gulfstream Park, she also finished second in the Ashland and fifth in the Kentucky Oaks. The winner’s share of $41,600 boosted her earnings to $532,010 for Clover Leaf Farms.

"She's a talented filly and she's run with some real quality fillies,” Gomez said. “She did everything handily and I was quite impressed. She was traveling well the whole time and when I split horses I thought I was really going to have to get after her to do it, but as soon as she saw daylight she just cut."

Bsharpsonata registered the fourth straight upset in the Pick Six sequence, setting up a carryover of $79,919. She paid $16.20, $6.60 and $4.60. Peppermint Lounge, who entered with four wins in five starts, retuned $4 and $3. The show payoff on Coco Belle was $3.60.

In the co-feature, favorite Slew’s Tiznow rallied under Rafael Bejarano to post a 3 3/4-length win over Pistol Pete Afleet in the $69,150 War Chant Stakes. The 3-year-old son of Tiznow covered 1 1/16 miles in a Cushion Track record of 1:40.34 as the race was moved from the turf due to recent rain.

Slew’s Tiznow, owned by Joseph Lacombe and trained by Doug O’Neill, won for the third time in six starts, banking $42,350 to raise his earnings to $247,870. He paid $4.40, $3 and $2.60. Pistol Pete Afleet returned $9 and $4.40, while the show payoff on Fifteen Love was $3.

“The Lacombes and I had talked about trying the turf,” O’Neill said. “When it rained and they took it off, it was a little bit of a bummer not being able to try him on the grass because we think he’s going to be a nice grass horse. We were very confident that he would enjoy the Cushion Track. Rafael rode him with so much confidence. Like Joe (Lacombe) said, he’s the type of horse that’s so talented that if he gets clear sailing any given day, he can jump up and run a monstrous race. He ran dynamite today.

Jockey Quotes

GARRETT GOMEZ, BSHARPSONATA, Winner: "She's a talented filly and she's run with some real quality fillies. My idea was that I didn't how close she was going to place me in the race and what she was going to be like sprinting. She's won going seven-eighths, but seven-eighths is different than three quarters. I thought being fresh she might place me up in the race and she did fairly easily. She did everything handily and I was quite impressed. She was travelling well the whole time and when I split horses I thought I was really going to have to get after her to do it but as soon as she saw daylight she just cut."

RAFAEL BEJARANO, PEPPERMINT LOUNGE, Second: "My filly always tries hard. We just got beaten by a better horse. A Grade 1 horse. I was in the perfect position and really comfortable but she drifted out a bit and let that other filly through."
