Buddy’s Humor Splashes to Victory in Pan American

Day-long rain at Gulfstream Park Saturday forced management to take races scheduled for the turf off that surface and run them on the main track, including the $150,000 Pan American Stakes (G3), but that worked out fine for Eli Lomita’s 5-year-old Buddy’s Humor as he wore down Patricia Generazio’s Presious Passion to win by three-quarters of a length.

A field of only five went to the post after the race was shifted from the scheduled 1 ½ miles on turf to 1 ¼ miles on a ‘sloppy’ main track. Jockey Jose Lezcano was aboard Buddy’s Humor for trainer Bruce Levine and stalked pace-setting Presious Passion from the start before surging to the lead in the upper stretch.

Stronach Stable’s Sligovitz was the 17-to-10 favorite and finished a non-threatening third, 5 ½ lengths behind the runner-up. Buddy’s Humor paid $11.60 for $2 to win and was timed in 2:02:64.

Winning Jockey Quotes

Jose Lezcano:

“The conditions obviously were difficult and the surface was tough. I knew the five horse (Presious Passion) was the speed horse so I let them go to the front and just stalked him before I asked mine (Buddy’s Humor) for a little something. It was around the 3/8s (pole) that we really turned it on. I felt good making the turn because I felt we were getting stronger. There was plenty horse.”

Winning Trainer Quote

Bruce Levine (from New York):

“We talked it over before the race and didn’t hesitate to go ahead and run when the race came off the turf. We were planning on going back to dirt with him later this year any way. I always thought distance would be no problem for him. When he ran in the United Nations last year (1 3/8 miles), the distance wasn’t the problem. He only got beat two lengths, but he got hurt in the race on the ‘yielding’ ground and we lost some time with him. I don’t have anything particular in mind for him next.”

(Note: The victory was the first of the meet for Levine from 13 starters.)
