BURG BERG WEARS DOWN BRIECAT IN SWINGTIME
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (October 10, 2010)—Burg Berg wore down pacesetter Briecat to win the $59,190 Swingtime Stakes Sunday at Oak Tree/Hollywood Park.
The 4-year-old filly was the lone favorite to win in the Pick Six, so there is a carryover of $82,055 into Monday. Post time for the special Columbus Day card is 1 p.m. The Pick Six begins in the fourth race.
In winning for the fourth time in 16 starts, Burg Berg, the even-money choice in the field of five, ended an eight race losing streak. Her last win prior to the Swingtime had come in a $57,380 allowance on June 7, 2009 over the Cushion Track at Hollywood Park.
Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, Burg Berg, who tracked the leader throughout before prevailing in the closing yards, paid $4, $2.80 and $2.10.
The final time for the mile on turf was 1:34.78. Burg Berg increased her career earnings to $226,654 with the half-length score.
Looking for her second win on grass, Briecat finished three-quarters of a length in front of Value Stream. Briecat returned $4.80 and $3.60. The show price on Value Stream, the longest shot in the field at 21-1, was $5. Ruffled Feathers, the top weight at 121 pounds, and Oui Say Oui completed the order of finish.
“I thought I was going to make the lead easy, but when I saw (Briecat) break on top, I just tried to get her to relax on the first turn,’’ said Bejarano, who has a meet high three stakes wins. “When I got to the three-eighths, I felt the pressure coming from behind, but my filly kept trying, little by little. I kept pushing and my horse finally passed the leader. She showed a big kick in the end.’’
The main event Monday is the $100,000 Morvich Handicap, a Grade III at six furlongs on turf. The Morvich is a Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In’’ Challenge race. The winner earns a berth in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint on Nov. 6 at Churchill Downs.
