Careless Rapture Wins Monday Feature

NEW ORLEANS (Monday, December 21, 2009) – Roy Varner’s Careless Rapture, never far off the pace, assumed control into the stretch and kicked clear in the final furlong to win Monday’s featured eighth race, a $49,000 allowance with claiming option at one mile on turf, by 1 ¾ lengths over 11 other Louisiana-bred females.

The 3-year-old filly by Entepreneur, trained by Mike Burgess and ridden by Curt Bourque, paid $13.80, 5.80 and $4.60. In her fourth win from 11 starts, Careless Rapture managed the “good” going over the Stall-Wilson turf course in 1:42.52 and increased her earnings to $118,560.

Steve & Patricia Roe’s Suzy Zip finished second—returning $12.80 and $8.40—while 1 ¾ lengths to the better of third-place finisher Roger Smith’s Tensas Palmyra, who paid $3.60 to show.

Stewart Madison’s Sister Ticket, a half to Grade I-winning Louisiana-bred Happy Ticket, set the early fractions of 25.80 and 51.92 before tiring to finish ninth.

Earlier on the program, Mike Rutherford’s Barton Springs established herself as one to watch on the road to the Grade II Fair Grounds Oaks. Making her second start, the Fusaichi Pegasus filly won the seventh race, a competitive maiden special weight at six furlongs, by three-quarters of a length with Jamie Theriot aboard for trainer Bret Calhoun.

Following a four-day holiday break, racing resumes Saturday at Fair Grounds with an 11-race program, highlighted by the $60,000 Buddy Diliberto Memorial Handicap, as well as the return of Grade I Blue Grass winner General Quarters, making his first start since the Preakness. First post on Saturday is 12:30 p.m.
