CENTENO CAPTURES FIVE WINS ON SUNDAY CARD

OLDSMAR, Fla. (February 22, 2009) Tampa’s leading rider Daniel Centeno added five more victories to his tally today, tying for second place for most wins on a single card at the Oldsmar oval. Today was the first time that the reinsman has won five races on one program. “It’s a great day!” said Centeno. “I’ve won four races many times, but never five.”

Richard DePass set the record of seven wins on one program in 1980; and Centeno is joined by Rick Luhr, Jorge Guerra, Herson Sanchez, Jesse Garcia and Joe Judice as jockeys that have booted home five winners in one day. The 37-year-old native of Venezuela has now accrued 75 wins from 271 mounts through 50 days of racing at the Oldsmar Oval.

Centeno took home his first win aboard Gnightsweetdarlin. The four-year-old Gulf Storm filly was bred in Florida by Spring Hill Farm and was conditioned to victory by Rick Slomkowski for owner Frank C. Calabrese. Centeno struck again on the turf with Rubaiyat, this time for trainer Christophe Clement and owner Peachtree Stable.

Centeno piloted Very Capo (ARG) to a narrow victory to take his next trip to the Winner’s Circle; it was the duo’s second straight win over the Tampa main track. Very Capo (ARG) is owned by Midwest Thoroughbreds and was sent to his tenth lifetime win by trainer Jamie Ness. Centeno booted home Tarva for his final win on the card in the Cody’s Original Roadhouse Race of the Week. Tarva is a five-year-old Petitionville mare carrying the colors of Wilbur C. Milhouse and is under the care of trainer Tom Proctor. Centeno got his historic fifth win in the day’s closer aboard Algazara. The Maria’s Mon filly is owned by Theresa Horky and Keith Shelansky and is trained by Brenda McCarthy.

Finish Lines… Racing excitement continues next week at Tampa Bay Downs with the $65,000 Wayward Lass Stakes for fillies and mares four years old an up competing over the main track at 1 1/16 miles on Saturday, February 28. Sunday, March 1 is Kids and Family Day at the Oldsmar oval, with free games, pony rides and more in the Tampa Bay Downs Backyard from noon through 3 PM.

Racing resumes Tuesday, February 24 with a ten race card; the High 5 carryover is $5,608.61. The Silks Poker Room is open daily from 12:30 PM through 12:30 AM, and The Downs Golf Practice Facility is open on Mondays from 10:00 AM through 10:00 PM and on Tuesdays through Sundays from 8:30 AM through 10:00 PM.
