CHIPS ALL IN FOR $75,000 POT IN ALCATRAZ STAKES AT GGF

Chips All In will put his perfect turf record on the line Saturday at Golden Gate Fields when he faces six rivals in the $75,000 Alcatraz Stakes.

The Alcatraz is for 3-year-olds and will be run at 1 1/16-miles on the Lakeside Turf Course. Chips All In is 2-for-2 on grass with the victories coming in the Eddie Logan and Pasadena Stakes at Santa Anita.

Chips All In, a Kentucky-bred colt by the Irish sire North Light, came from just off the pace to win the one-mile Eddie Logan by 1 1/4 lengths on Dec. 31 and led from start to finish while capturing the one-mile Pasadena by a neck on March 23.

Chips All In is trained by Jeff Mullins and will be ridden in the Alcatraz by Aaron Gryder, who is second in the Golden Gate Fields jockey standings with 91 victories. Chips All In has five wins and a second in seven career starts and $193,600 in earnings.

The Alcatraz fields also features graded stakes-winner Stoney Fleece and multiple stakes-winner Longview Drive.

Stoney Fleece won the Grade 3 Generous Stakes, a one-mile turf test, at Hollywood Park last year and has placed in four other stakes. Stoney Fleece hopes to turn the tables on Chips All In, a horse that has defeated him twice – in the Eddie Logan and the Pasadena. Stoney Fleece finished third in the Eddie Logan (1 3/4 lengths behind Chips All In) and seventh in the Pasadena (2 1/2 lengths behind the winner).

Stoney Fleece, trained by John Sadler, tops the Alcatraz field in money won with $246,860 in earnings. Jockey Kevin Krigger will ride Stoney Fleece, who has finished in the money in eight of his 11 career starts.

Longview Drive hails from the Jerry Hollendorfer barn and will be making his first start since running last in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby on April 7. Longview Drive won two stakes as a 2-year-old last year, taking the six-furlong Cavonnier Juvenile at Santa Rosa and the 1 1/16-mile Charlie Palmer Futurity at the Big Fresno Fair.

Russell Baze will ride Longview Drive, who will be making his turf debut.

The field for the Alcatraz Stakes, in post position order and with riders, is as follows: Cahill Chrome, Juan Hernandez; Pepnic, Cristobal Herrera; Chips All In, Gryder; Stoney Fleece, Krigger; Press Baron, Jose Valdivia, Jr.; The Roan Ranger, Frank Alvarado; and Longview Drive, Russell Baze. All of the starters will carry 120 pounds.

Cahill Chrome ran second in the California Derby on Jan. 14, Pepnic broke his maiden on the turf last Saturday at Golden Gate Fields, British-bred Press Baron made his U.S. debut April 12 and finished third in a one-mile allowance race on the Santa Anita turf, and The Roan Ranger is coming off a pair of route wins on Golden Gate Fields’ synthetic Tapeta racing surface.

The Alcatraz is the seventh race on a nine-race program and will be run at approximately 4:15 p.m.

The racing week at Golden Gate Fields begins Thursday with a seven-race program and continues through Sunday. Post time each day is 1:15 p.m.
