DAVIS WINS FOUR ON OPENING DAY AT SUFFOLK DOWNS

EAST BOSTON, MA - Jockey Jacqueline Davis, second in the standings in 2011, rode four winners on Saturday’s Opening Day program at Suffolk Downs before an enthusiastic crowd of 6,834 as the East Boston oval welcomed back former track announcer and NBC’s current voice of the Triple Crown Larry Collmus.

In the third race, Davis guided Dan’s Commander ($6.60) to a 4 ½ length romp for Michael McKenzie and in the fifth race, she pulled off a minor upset on the rail with Glory’s List ($14.20) for Kenneth Burns. Her success continued in the seventh with a front-running victory aboard Last Laugh Now ($6.60) for Tom McCooey, Jr. and she teamed up with trainer Tim Kirby in the ninth and final race with Gambler’s Honour ($7.00).

Davis is currently in her third season at the East Boston oval after spending the winter riding in her home state, New York.

Collmus, who call next Saturday’s Belmont Stakes for NBC, returned to the Suffolk Downs announcer’s booth for the first time since 2008. Collmus served as track announcer at Suffolk Downs from 1992-2008. T.D. Thornton is back for his fifth season as full-time announcer.

On Opening Day, Suffolk Downs honored two “Community Winner’s Circle” recipients for their positive contributions to their local communities. The track recognized Paul Antonino of Wakefield, who on April 1 entered a burning building on Chelsea St. in East Boston to alert residents of a fire that was raging above them and assist elderly residents in escaping the building safely. The track also honored Generations Incorporated for its programs in East Boston and Revere in which older adults volunteer their time to assist children in need of literacy tutoring.

Members of the East Boston High School Jr. ROTC presented the colors for the national anthem, which was performed by Jason Rambler of the All-Star Buglers.

Live racing resumes Monday. Opening Day will be followed by a pair of three-day race weeks (Monday, Wednesday and Saturday) before adding Tuesdays to create a four-day schedule through the end of September.
