DEL CAP FESTIVAL RACING NEWS & NOTES
WILMINGTON, DELAWARE, July 7 – Trainer Brad Cox has made the move from Kentucky to Delaware with thirteen horses including a potential Delaware Handicap contender in K.C. Garrett Farm’s Temple Street.
“The summer time racing at home in Kentucky really falls off once the meet Churchill is over,” said trainer Brad Cox. “I have a couple of fillies I feel are stakes caliber and this time of year, there is really nothing at all for them. Delaware’s racing secretary Pat Pope was another reason for the move. He was very good to me this winter in Arkansas (Oaklawn). He was very gracious in giving me stalls in the middle of the Delaware meet which is huge. That is big for that to happen and I am very grateful for that.”
“We have Temple Street and she is probably the queen of the barn,” said trainer Brad Cox. “We claimed her for $15,000 and we got her Grade I and Grade II stakes placed. We won a couple of allowance races with her as well. We are pointing her for the Delaware Handicap (July 19). The last time out (Grade II Fleur de Lis, Churchill Downs), we tried her at a mile and an eighth and she ran third. She definitely takes herself out of it in the beginning of a race and comes with one run. Julian Leparoux rode her last time and he said he could not see any reason why she would not go further than a mile and an eighth. The Del ‘Cap is a big pot so that is big reason to run her. The distance is a little unknown, but she handled the mile and an eighth and she really was not tiring so I think she will get the distance.”
Neil Howard, Helen Pitts-Blasi, Steve Margolis, Robert O’Connor and Wallace Dollase have or are scheduled to start shifting horses east to Delaware Park as well.
