Del Mar Futurity Climaxes Successful Race Meeting
Del Mar climaxes another highly-successful Thoroughbred racing season Wednesday with a ten-race program featuring the traditional closing-day headliner, the 65th running of the Grade I $300,000 Del Mar Futurity at seven furlongs for the most talented two-year-olds in the West.
A field of 12 juveniles is scheduled to battle in the Futurity, including Know More who accomplished the rare feat of winning a stakes in his career debut, capturing the Grade II Best Pal August 5. The son of Lion Heart will have Garrett Gomez in the saddle again.
Others in the deep field are winners Gabriel Charles, Joe Talamo; the filly Switch to the Lead, Julien Leparoux; Yankee Rebel, Victor Espinoza; Heir of Storm, Martin Garcia, plus maidens The Whole Deal, Alonso Quinonez; Pure Loyalty, David Flores; Caballo Del Cielo, Mike Smith, and Ive Struck a Nerve, Jose Valdivia, Jr.
The program Wednesday, beginning with the first race at 2 p.m., also will have three attractive supporting features – the $85,000 C.E.R.F. Stakes for older fillies and mares at six furlongs on the main track; the inaugural running of the $100,000 Oak Tree Juvenile Turf for two-year-olds at one mile on the infield grass course, and the $85,000 Pirate’s Bounty Stakes for older horses at six furlongs.
The Del Mar Futurity is carded as the eighth race, with the C.E.R.F. Stakes as the third, the Oak Tree Juvenile Turf in the fifth slot and the Pirate’s Bounty the sixth race.
