Wilmington, Del., May 11, 2011 —After making a run at racing history in the Kentucky Derby, the leading jockey from last year, Rosie Napravnik is scheduled to make her return to Delaware Park this Monday. The 23-year-old native of Morristown, New Jersey, who finished ninth in the Kentucky Derby aboard Pants on Fire, has six scheduled mounts on the Monday card.

Last year, Napravnik became the first female rider in the history of Delaware Park to capture the leading jockey title by posting a record of 126 winners from 529 mounts. She followed up her Delaware Park success by winning the Louisiana Derby and capturing the leading jockey title at the Fair Grounds, and in so doing she became the first female to win the Louisiana Derby and the first female to win the Fair Grounds jockey title.

Last year, she notched her 1,000th career victory at Delaware Park aboard Laughing Charlie on October 27. In 2009, Napravnik finished second in the Delaware Park standings to David Cohen; in 2008, she finished fifth. Her first career win came on her first mount, Ringofdiamonds, at Pimlico on June 9, 2005.

Elite Alex runs second

Elite Alex, once a highly regarded contender on the road to the Kentucky Derby, finished second beaten 7-lengths in a $41,000 allowance at Delaware Park today. With Joe Rocco, Jr., aboard the 3-year-old son of Afleet Alex was the 2-to-5 favorite in the field of five.

The winner, I’m Steppin’ It Up with Brian Pedroza, returned $15.40 and covered the mile in 1:36.15 over a fast main track.

In his previous effort, Elite Alex finished ninth in the Grade I Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park on April 16. On March 26, the Ontario-bred conditioned by Delaware Park-based trainer Tim Ritchey, ran fourth in the Grade II Louisiana Derby at the Fair Grounds. Last year, Elite Alex broke his maiden at Delaware Park in his career debut going five furlongs. He has a record of a win, two seconds and a third from six starts with earnings of $106,000.
