DETERMINATO WINS $100,000 SPECTACULAR BID
HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Ron Marano’s homebred Determinato, trained by Larry Pilotti and ridden by Eibar Coa, took the lead inside the eighth pole Saturday to win the $100,000 Spectacular Bid Stakes by 1 ¼ lengths at Gulfstream Park.
A 3-year-old son of Closing Argument, Determinato covered the six furlongs in 1:11.13. Leave of Absence was second while Cane Garden Bay was a nose behind in third.
TRAINER LARRY PILOTTI: “We knew he was a nice horse from the beginning. He’s had a few issues along the way like a pulled muscle and a few other things. The (Jack Price) was our fault. Ron’s (owner Ron Marano) father died earlier this year and that race came up around his birthday, so we ran him back a little quicker than we should as kind of a tribute, but it didn’t work. I had U Can Do It (winner of more than $700,000) for the family a few years back. We’ll probably try him in the seven-eighths next (Hutcheson Stakes (G2) on Feb. 26).”
Jockey Eibar Coa: “I thought our best chance was to be close to the pace. He seems to run better when he’s into the race more. I’ve worked him the last three times and those works gave me a lot of confidence heading into today.”
