Donegal Confirms Dullahan Will Run Next in Belmont Stakes

DES MOINES, Iowa (May 11, 2012) — Jerry Crawford, managing partner of Donegal Racing, announced today that Dullahan, the two-time Grade I winner and third place finisher in this year’s Kentucky Derby, will race next in the Belmont Stakes on June 9.

“Dale Romans loves the way Dullahan came out of the Kentucky Derby and believes we could win the Preakness,” Crawford said. “But we believe we have a three-year-old ‘Horse of the Year’ candidate and that his future is best served by not asking him to race for the third time in just five weeks in the Preakness.”

In focusing on the Belmont Stakes, Dullahan will be running on a track where both his sire, Even the Score, and his broodmare’s sire, Smart Strike, won races.

“We also love the fact that the Belmont Stakes has been a stallion producer with A.P. Indy, Lemon Drop Kid, Empire Maker and Birdstone being great examples,” Crawford added.

Donegal Racing is an Iowa-based stable with a penchant for identifying, buying and training stakes race-caliber horses. Dullahan is the stable’s second horse in three years to qualify for the Kentucky Derby. In 2010, Paddy O’Prado finished third in the Kentucky Derby and went on to win the Secretariat Stakes and Dixie Stakes before retiring to stud at Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky.
