DOPPIO CLICKS THURSDAY IN DEL MAR MAIN EVENT

DEL MAR, CA – Keith Brackpool’s Doppio came widest and fastest of all through the stretch here Thursday to captured the $72,000 feature by a length under leading rider Rafael Bejarano.

The husky gelding by Del Mar Pacific Classic winner Gentleman covered the six and one-half furlongs in 1:16.17 on the Polytrack to register his ninth win in his 18th career start and the $43,200 winner’s share of the purse pushed his bank account to $291,760. Doppio is trained by Carla Gaines.

Finishing second in the dash for allowance horses or claiming types carrying a $100,000 tag was Stonestreet Stables Peace Chant, a half-length ahead of Arthur Hancock III’s Canteen.

Doppio paid $10.20, $5.20 and $4 across the board. Peace Chant returned $5.20 and $4.60 and Canteen paid $5.80.

The victory was the second of the day for the Peruvian Bejarano, who is off to a rapid start through eight days of racing at the seaside meet. He now has 13 firsts to lead runner-up Tyler Baze by five wins.

With no one selecting all six winners in the day's Pick Six, there will be a carryover of $115,402 going into Friday's twilight card.

Thursday’s on-track crowd on an overcast afternoon was 9,600.
