Doubles for Selvaratnam and Watson at Jebel Ali

The 'home team' of trainer Dhruba Selvaratnam and jockey William Buick were in double form at Jebel Ali on Friday afternoon on what was an ultra competitive six race card. They combined with Meeriss to win the featured 1600m handicap, kindly sponsored by his Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum's Derrinstown Stud, before course specialist Mannjal was awarded the 1200m handicap after Montpellier was demoted.

Buick was sporting the famous yellow silks of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum on both winners and Selvaratnam's main patron, who also owns the course, was only narrowly denied a treble after Airbuss was a gallant second in the other 1600m handicap.

Buick said: "The horses are running well and it is obviously nice to ride winners, especially on this track. I had a great first season here last time and can hopefully do as well again."

Selvaratnam added: "William is a promising young jockey and settled in well. Meeriss deserved to get his head in front and Mannjal would have been an unlucky loser."

Airbuss tried hard to haul in Seeking An Alibi in that first 1600m handicap but it was that Abdulla Bin Huzaim-trained rival who ran on too strongly to repeat his course and distance victory of the previous week. Carlos Sanchez was in the saddle on both occasions.

Champion Trainer Doug Watson and jockey Tadhg O'Shea won the first race last week with Alsadeek and repeated the trick with Call Me George who landed the opening 1950m handicap for the duo, while Alsadeek's form was given a boost by the victory of Rawalbandie in the concluding 1000m dash. Trained by Rashed Bouresly, Rawalbandi chased home Alsadeek last week but scored well on this occasion under Daragh O'Donohoe.

Watson completed a double with Fingerprint landing the 1400m handicap under Richard Mullen who said: "He has had to battle quite hard in the end but it was a fair effort giving weight all round."
