Dubai Gold Cup Joins the Richest Day in Racing

Dubai, UAE, October 6, 2011 – The Dubai World Cup, recognized as the “world’s richest day in racing,” will surpass its own record in 2012 as Meydan officials announced the addition of the newly renamed Dubai Gold Cup to the programme, a move that will increase the racecard to nine events with overall prize money to US$27,250 million.

The Dubai Gold Cup is a 3,200 metre Group Three turf event that will offer a purse of US$1 million. The addition completes the Dubai World Cup programme’s offerings to feature significant events for all divisions, on all surfaces, from sprinters to stayers.

Previously announced as the rebranded Dubai World Cup Carnival (DWCC), the season will be expanded to offer 16 fixtures. The DWCC will be held from January 5, which will be highlighted by the opening of the two-day Meydan Masters, an international jockey’s challenge, through the concluding event, the Dubai World Cup and featured on March 31, 2012.

“As the popularity of the Dubai World Cup and racing at Meydan grows, we must keep in step to encourage and foster the development of the sport, said Mr. Saeed Humaid Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and CEO of Meydan.

“Meydan has developed as a centerpiece of the international racing calendar and the further growth of the Dubai World Cup and Dubai World Cup Carnival will ensure that Dubai serves as a winter destination for some the biggest names in racing. We are pleased with our past accomplishments, but we also look to the future for even greater experiences in racing for Meydan, the Dubai World Cup and the UAE.”

The move of the Dubai Gold Cup to the Dubai World Cup night is the second addition to the race program in the past two years as the Al Quoz Sprint joined the lineup in 2010 to become the 8th race on the night. The inaugural running of the Dubai World Cup racemeeting in 1996 featured six events
