ESCALON WILL TRY TO REBOUND IN REAL QUIET STAKES

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (Nov. 6, 2008) — Escalon, third as the favorite in the California Cup Juvenile, will try to make amends in the fourth running of the $100,000 Real Quiet Stakes on Saturday at Hollywood Park.

Escalon, who broke his maiden while making his career bow on Aug. 1 at Del Mar, will be starting for the fourth time in the 1 1/16-mile Real Quiet. He finished sixth in the Del Mar Futurity two starts back.

“Escalon was a ground-saving third in the Cal Cup Juvenile, has been training great since, and keeping (jockey Rafael) Bejarano is a big help,” said trainer Doug O’Neill, who will also saddle Mark S the Cooler.

The Real Quiet drew a field of seven, which will line up as follows from the rail out:

Mark S the Cooler, with Michael Baze up, will carry 115 pounds; When We Met, Mike Smith, 117; J P Jammer, Aaron Gryder, 117; Chocolate Candy, Garrett Gomez, 117; Danny Q, Martin Pedroza, 117; Escalon, Bejarano, 117, and Charlie’s Moment, Joel Rosario, 119.

Mark S the Cooler, who has finished third and second, respectively, in two starts to date, will be running around two turns for the first time.

“I’ve always been real high on him,” O’Neill said. “The added distance should be a real help.”

Charlie’s Moment broke his maiden in his third start at Del Mar on July 26, finished fourth in the Best Pal, then won the Gateway to Glory at Fairplex Park. He was beaten a nose while making his most recent start in the Jack Goodman at Santa Anita Park and tops the field with $108,450 in earnings.

Chocolate Candy, a son of Candy Ride who is trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, broke his maiden while traveling one mile in his most recent start.

When We Met beat Mark S the Cooler while breaking his maiden on Oct. 19 at Santa Anita; J P Jammer won his career debut before finishing fourth in the Cal Cup Juvenile in his second start, and Danny Q followed up his maiden win with a third in the Barretts Juvenile and a sixth-place finish in the Cal Cup Juvenile.
