Exhibit, Book Signing for “Backside” Set At Del Mar

Photo-journalist Helen Montgomery-Drysdale's collection of black and white pictures of life on the Del Mar backstretch will be displayed at the track this summer -- in an exhibition and also at a book signing featuring her latest work: "Backside: The World Renowned Del Mar Racetrack."

Montgomery-Drysdale, a photographer for more than a half century, noted that she has spent portions of the past 20 years taking intimate photos among the men, women and animals who live at the seaside track each summer. "Simply," she stated, "I did this project because I love the horses and the people."

Several of her pictures will be on display on the main floor of the Clubhouse throughout the meet, while others will be positioned in the fifth-floor Pacific Classic Room. On Saturday, August 1, Montgomery-Drysdale will participate in a book signing in Plaza de Mexico outside the Silks Gift Shop from 1 to 2 p.m.

The book, published by the New York-based Worthy Shorts, consists of 48 selected photos that offer a look at a part of Thoroughbred racing that the public normally does not see.

The Del Mar resident has worked on a myriad of projects throughout her professional career, ranging from photo shoots of Hollywood stars to documenting the inhabitants of Inner Mongolia. She believes strongly in human and animal rights and has taken her camera around the world to tell stories of both.
