Fillies up for rematch in Valdale Stakes
FLORENCE, KY . . . February 20, 2009 . . . The top three finishers of the Cincinnati Trophy Stakes will be back at Turfway Park Saturday to face off again in the $50,000 Valdale Stakes. Carded for three-year-old fillies, the one-mile Valdale is the second of two local preps for the Grade III Bourbonette Oaks, itself a prep for the Grade I Kentucky Oaks.
Tacky Cat drew off to win the 6 1/2-furlong Cincinnati Trophy by an easy six lengths, and while the Valdale will be her first attempt at two turns, her willingness to sit off the pace may help her take that next step. Orlando Mojica is back aboard for trainer Wayne Mogge.
Trained by David Pate, She’s Due was third in the Cincinnati Trophy, finishing less than a length behind Emma Darling. She’s Due has just a maiden win but has been in the money consistently, missing just once, since the light went on after her second race. She finished third in a mile allowance at Turfway early this month, so she brings good two-turn experience to the Valdale. She will be ridden again by Leandro Gonçalves, second in the standings and hot of late.
All three fillies train at Turfway and have posted strong works, with She’s Due clocking a best-of-six five furlongs last Friday.
Mogge also enters Bodazzle, who broke her maiden at 1 1/16 miles last month at Turfway. One race before she was a tough second by a nose at a mile, also at Turfway. Otto Thorwarth will be aboard.
Bill Connelly enters Spoilher, who broke her maiden by 4 1/2 lengths for a $30,000 tag in December and came back February 4 with a 6 3/4-length allowance score. Both were at the Valdale distance and both came over Turfway’s Polytrack. John McKee, aboard Bodazzle for her maiden win, rides Spoilher in the Valdale.
Also entered are Walloon (jockey Hector Rosario Jr.); Satans Quick Chick (Julio Felix); Almost Perfect (Inosencio Diego); Karacuda (Tom Pompell); Grace Almighty, a Hawthorne maiden winner making just her second start (Jerry La Sala); Janou (Rodney Prescott); and Super Poni (Godofredo Laurente).
The Valdale is the 11th of 12 races on Saturday’s card. First post is 1:10pm.
