GET FUNKY WINS GREEN FLASH ‘CAP
Keith Abrahams' Get Funky, winner of the 2006 Del Mar Derby at nine furlongs on the grass, continued to succeed in his new role as a turf sprinter with a game victory in Wednesday's featured $90,220 Green Flash Handicap over the infield Jimmy Durante Turf Course.
Scoring his fourth triumph in as many starts sprinting on the grass, Get Funky sliced between horses in the final sixteenth under deft handling by jockey Jose Valdivia Jr., winning by a half-length over the 6-5 favorite Idiot Proof.
Get Funky, another runner from the red-hot barn of leading trainer John Sadler, ran the five furlongs in :55.39 and returned $7.40, $3.20 and $2.40. First money of $50,964 increased his lifetime earnings to $604,757 and it was his seventh victory in 16 starts.
Idiot Proof, making his first start since finishing second in the Dubai Golden Shaheen last March, paid $3 and $2.40, while Magic Texan returned $3.80 to show.
Get Funky, a Florida-bred son of Straight Man, is being pointed to the $1 million Breeders' Turf Sprint at 6 1/2 furlongs on Santa Anita's unique downhill grass course Saturday, October 25. Prior to that, Sadler said, Get Funky will prep for the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint in the Morvich Handicap, a race he won in 2007.
Wednesday's attendance was 10,475.
