Giant Oak, Eldaafer & Rule Drill for Donn Handicap
Three probable starters in next Saturday’s $500,000 Donn Handicap (G1) at Gulfstream Park posted workouts Sunday morning -- Virginia Tarra Trust’s 5-year-old Giant Oak worked five furlongs in 59 3/5 and Alghuwayriyah’ Stable’s 6-year-old gelding Eldaafer a half-mile in 48 3/5 at Gulfstream, while WinStar Farm’s 4-year-old Rule earning the ‘bullet’ for five-eighths at Palm Meadows with a 1:00 4/5 clocking.
The 53rd edition of the 1 1/8 miles Donn Handicap highlights a Graded stakes triple-header to be run on one of the biggest days of the season at Gulfstream along with the $300,000 Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap (G1) at 1 1/8 miles and the $150,000 Suwannee River Stakes (G3) for fillies and mares at 1 1/8 miles on turf.
Also hitting the work tabs Sunday morning preparing for next Saturday’s Gulfstream Turf were Priscilla Vaccarezza and partner’s 4-year-old gelding Little Mike going five furlongs in 1:00 2/5 and Daniel-Yves Treves’ 6-year-old Never On Sunday the same distance in 1:02 2/5, both on turf at Gulfstream; and Peachtree Stable’s 7-year-old Twilight Meteor an easy half-mile in 50 2/5 on the main track at Calder Race Course.
Apriority & Amazing Settle for Second in Sunshine Millions at Santa Anita
South Florida trainers David Fawkes and Marty Wolfson each had to be pleased but frustrated with the way their horses ran in Saturday’s Sunshine Millions races at Gulfstream Park and Santa Anita as both horsemen had runners finish second in the rich races at both tracks.
Fawkes made the trip to Santa Anita and sent out Donald Dizney’s 4-year-old Apriority to finish second by a head in the $200,000 Sprint at Santa Anita as JoAnn and Alex Lieblong and partners’ 5-year-old Duke o Mischief finished second behind 25-to-1 longshot Tackleberry in the $500,000 Classic at Gulfstream after looming boldly in the upper stretch.
Wolfson saddled Marilyn Vogel’s 7-year-old mare Jessica Is Back to finish second by a nose in the $200,000 Filly & Mare Sprint at Gulfstream before Farnsworth Stables’ 5-year-old mare Amazing ran a big race to finish second behind favorite Evening Jewel in the $300,000 Distaff at Santa Anita.
