GOLD EDGE, MUPPET MAN SHARE SATURDAY STAKES HONORS
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (Aug. 4, 2012) – The first 2-year-old stakes races of the season in Chicago went to favorites as Dolphus Morrison’s Gold Edge captured the $67,100 Lisa M Stakes for fillies and Curtis Green’s Muppet Man scored in the open counterpart, the $66,700 Meadowlake Stakes.
In the Lisa M, Gold Edge overcame early traffic problems and was able to get to the outside in upper stretch in time to rally for a ¾-length victory over All Her Class. With Chris Emigh in the irons, the Lon Wiggins-trained daughter of Eddington covered the seven furlongs over Polytrack in 1:25.93.
The victory kept her career record a perfect two-for-two and the $38,649 pushed her earnings to $55,629. Sent off as the 17-10 favorite, Gold Edge paid $5.40, $3 and $2.20.
All Her Class ($3.60 and $2.80), who took the lead in the stretch but was unable to hold off the eventual winner, was second in the field of nine 2-year-old fillies. It was another half-length back to third-place runner Bridgette Bordeaux ($2.60).
Some Temper, Bethany Belle, Larissa’s Love, Flattering Touch, Bluegrass Ellie and Bloody Smart completed the order of finish.
In the Meadowlake, Muppet Man took the lead at the three-eighths pole and drew off for an impressive 4 ¾-length tally in the seven-furlong race for juveniles. Jeffrey Sanchez was aboard the Jim DiVito-trained son of Corinthian who got the distance in 1:23.97.
“This is a real nice horse,” said DiVito, who has been extremely successful in getting young horses ready to race. “He does everything real easy. He gets over the ground nice. He trains any way you want. He’s an easy horse to train.”
Muppet Man, who wired maidens in his debut on July 1, remained perfect in his brief career. He added $38,820 to his bankroll which now stands at $62,820.
Triple Cross ran second in the eight-horse field, 1 ¾- lengths to the good of third-place finisher Stormin Monarcho. Ultimo Trago, Road Agent, Bluegale, Happy Cooper and Emile completed the order of finish.
Sent off as the 8-5 favorite, Muppet Man paid $5.20, $3.20 and $2.20. Triple Cross returned $4.40 and $2.80. Stormin Monarcho paid $2.80.
