GOMEZ AIMS FOR THIRD SKIRBALL-KENIS WIN IN FOUR YEARS
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (Nov. 13, 2008) — Garrett Gomez, rider of two of the last three winners, will aim for his third victory aboard supplemental entry Solar Miss in Saturday’s sixth running of the $65,000-added Audrey Skirball-Kenis Stakes at Hollywood Park.
Gomez, the nation’s Eclipse Award-winning jockey in 2007, matched Jerry Bailey’s 2003 record of 70 stakes wins when he guided Hucking Hot to victory in the Skirball-Kenis a year ago. He also rode Pussycat Doll to victory in 2005.
Solar Miss, owned by Eric Jensen, will face eight other 3-year-old fillies in the 1 1/8-mile turf race, which lines up as follows from the rail out:
Stroppy, with Michael Baze up, carries 115 pounds; Mohaka, Victor Espinoza, 115; Set of Wings, David Flores, 115; You Lift Me Up, Mike Smith, 119; Miss Singhsix, Alex Solis, 117; Solar Miss, Gomez, 117; Sensational Love, Rafael Bejarano, 117; Famous Ruby, Joel Rosario, 121, and Fire n’ Brimstone, Tyler Baze, 115.
Miss Singhsix, an Irish-bred daughter of Singspiel, finished fourth in the Ramser following a second in the Torrey Pines at Del Mar. The Paddy Gallagher-trained filly has two wins in six starts.
Famous Ruby, owned and trained by Jorge Alcala, posted an upset win in the Cal Cup Matron in her last start and is three-for-seven overall. She finished off the board in her lone turf start to date.
Jerry Hollendorfer will saddle You Lift Me Up, who finished sixth in the Miss America at Golden Gate Fields in September. Prior to that, she won a minor stakes at the Bay Meadows fair meet in August. Claimed for $32,000 five starts back, she is four-for-15 overall.
Fire n’ Brimstone and Mohaka finished second and third respectively in an allowance race at nine furlongs on turf in October; Stroppy finished third in the Cal Cup Matron before being claimed for $32,000; Set of Wings aims for her second win in her fifth start, and Sensational Love finished fourth behind You Lift Me Up in the Bay Meadows stake.
The Audrey Skirball-Kenis will run as the eighth race on Saturday’s nine-race program at Hollywood Park. First post time is 12:30 p.m.
