Gozzip Girl Rallies to Coconut Grove Victory

Farnsworth Farm’s 3-year-old filly Gozzip Girl made a huge run around horses nearing the stretch of Sunday’s $125,000 Coconut Grove Stakes at Gulfstream Park and went on to score by 2¼ lengths over Chester Bishop’s Oilgonewile, who set all the pace in the 1 1/16 miles turf test until overtaken by the winner.

Jockey Kent Desormeaux was aboard Gozzip Girl for trainer Tom Albertrani as the daughter of Dynaformer made only the fourth start of a promising career, posting a mild upset at 10-1 after being timed in 1:40:80 over the ‘firm’ course. Albertrani had sent out Padua Stable’s 3-year-old colt Duke of Homberg, a son of Dynaformer, to win the Hallandale Beach Stakes Saturday in the companion event to the Coconut Grove.

Andrew Farm and Frank O’Connor’s Obsequious finished third in Sunday’s race, a head behind the runner-up, while Shadwell Farm’s favorite Habaya checked in ?? in the field of 11 3-year-old fillies.

Winning Jockey Quotes

Kent Desormeaux:

“It was an eventful trip to say the least. She was fast today. I did some controlling, instead of being controlled. I was in good position. I asked her a couple times and got what I wanted. She kicked it in around the three-eighths pole.”

Winning Trainer Quote

Tom Albertrani:

“I always liked this filly. She was meant for grass, but when she was entered for turf the first time out and the race came off, we decided to try her on dirt to see if she liked it. It turned out she didn’t. Then she ran a big race to win her next start and ran well in her last start with trouble in the race, good enough to encourage her to go into this spot. It’s a long season so I might not run her again down here and wait for the spring and summer.”
