Gulfstream Today: 1.27.12

Boys At Tosconova, a Grade 1 stakes winner at 2, appeared ready to rejoin the stakes ranks Friday with a game triumph in the fourth race by three-quarters of a length.

The 4-year-old son of Officer, who captured the 2010 Hopeful (G1), encountered less-than-ideal conditions in the one-mile optional claiming allowance while racing along the rail, lapped on by pacesetting Groupie Doll, on the backstretch and on the turn into the homestretch. But when a confident Javier Castellano asked him for his run at the top of the stretch, Boys At Tosconova responded to the vigorous hand ride to out-game the stakes-winning filly to the finish line.

In winning his third straight allowance race, Boys At Tosconova ran the one-turn mile distance in 1:35.87. Groupie Doll, who had previously won an allowance race at Gulfstream on Dec. 22, finished 4 ½ lengths clear of third-place finisher Flatter This.

Boys At Tosconova is expected to return in the one-mile Gulfstream Park Handicap (G2) on March 10.

Quote of the Day: “He’s shown up the last three times and it’s time for us to start going in stakes again now,” said trainer Rick Dutrow after Boys At Tosconova collected his third straight allowance victory in the fourth race.

Work of the Day: In preparation for an expected start in the Donn Handicap (G1) on Feb. 11, Flat Out breezed five furlongs at Gulfstream Park in 59.20 seconds. The 2011 Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) winner turned in the fastest clocking of 26 recorded at the distance.

Who’s Hot: John Velazquez rode two winners on the card: Be Welcome ($10.40) in the first and Table Three Ten ($3.20), who ran her record to 2-for-2 in her first start for Team Valor International and trainer Graham Motion in the sixth race.

Jose Lezcano also found the winner’s circle twice with first-time starter Starship Quality ($39.80) in the seventh and Unaccountable ($6.40) in the ninth
