Gulfstream Today: 2.15.12

Trainer Christopher Clement unveiled a future stakes performer in the featured ninth race, a $64,000 allowance won in impressive fashion by Future Generation ($7).

Making her first start in the U.S., the 4-year-old son of Hurricane Run stalked the early pace before kicking in through the stretch to draw off to victory under a hand ride by Rajiv Maragh.

A Group 3 stakes winner in Ireland last year, Future Generation ran a mile on turf in 1:38.16 while finishing 1 ½ lengths ahead of a late-closing Romin Robin and jockey Jozbin Santana. Cumulonimble finished third, another three quarters of a length back, under Joe Rocco Jr.

“She’s done well from the beginning. She’ll go in a stakes next time,” said Clement, mentioning the Honey Fox (G3) at Gulfstream on March 18 as a possible target. “She’s a good horse, and he rode her like a good horse. He got a great trip. He got her to the inside and had a good trip.”

Future Generation, owned by George Bolton and Peter Leidel, had not raced since last August at The Curragh.

Quote of the Day: “I’m very excited to get him back, and now that we’ve entered him I’m extremely anxious,” said trainer Graham Motion after entering 2011 Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom in Saturday’s fifth race, a prep for the $10 million Dubai World Cup on March 31.

Work of the Day: Capt. Candyman Can breezed an easy half-mile in 51.03 seconds during a maintenance workout at Palm Meadows for Saturday’s $150,000 Gulfstream Park Sprint Championship.

Who’s Hot: Javier Castellano rode three winners on the card, including two for trainer Chad Brown with Hyper ($4.20) in the third and Too Clever by Half ($5) in the fifth. The meeting’s leading rider also visited the winner’s circle with Pleasant Hymn ($3.60) in the sixth.

Hyper’s victory at five furlongs on turf was his third straight success at the meeting, keeping his career record at Gulfstream perfect at 4-for-4.

Rajiv Maragh visited the winner’s circle with Mize the Big Cat ($8.80) in the fourth race, as well as with Future Generation in the featured ninth.
