Gulfstream Today: 3.15.12

Making his first start since winning his career debut at Saratoga last July, Professor Fate was rated a few lengths off the early pace before making an outside drive through the stretch to post a ¾ -length victory in the fifth race.

Professor Fate ($8.40) was ridden by leading rider Javier Castellano, who needs only two more winners to equal the record for most wins by a jockey during a Gulfstream meeting. Jerry Bailey (1996), Wigberto Ramos (1991) and Julio Pezua (1987) share the record with 97 trips to the winner’s circle.

Professor Fate ran six furlongs over a sloppy track in 1:11.03 to finish first in the $48,625 optional claiming allowance for 3-year-olds. Our Mr. Bud, the 6-5 favorite ridden by John Velazquez, finished second, two lengths clear of third-place finisher Ten Past Ten and jockey Luis Jurado.

Avalon Farms’ winning homebred debuted at Saratoga on July 11, overcoming a troubled and wide journey to prevail by two lengths over Silver Max, a two-time winner at the current Gulfstream meeting.

Note: Due to heavy morning rains, the four races scheduled to be run on turf were moved to the main track. It was the first time in the 23 racing days since Feb. 10 that there was no turf racing.

Quote of the Day: “He ran really well off the layoff. He’s been training really well. I was a little concerned about the sloppy track, but he handled it well and Javier (Castellano) gave him a perfect ride. We’re hoping to run him back here at the meet. He’s going to be a nice horse,” said trainer Eddie Kenneally after saddling Professor Fate for victory in the fifth race, a $48,625 optional claiming allowance race for 3-year-olds.

Work of the Day: Redeemed, who finished third in the Donn Handicap (G1) last time out, breezed six furlongs at Gulfstream Park in preparation for a likely start in the Skip Away (G3) on March 31. Trainer Richard Dutrow’s multiple-stakes winner was timed in 1:14 2/5 with jockey Edgar Prado up.

Who’s Hot: Enjoying success during his first Gulfstream Park meeting, Joe Rocco Jr. rode a pair of winners on the card: Ainsley ($18) in the second and J Isle ($5.20) in the ninth.
