Gulfstream Today: 4.5.12

Owner-trainer Angel Quiroz’ 3-year-old gelding Jordon’s Image split horses at the top of the stretch to draw along outside E. Paul Robsham Stable’s 13-to-10 favorite Angel’s Tune in Thursday’s sixth race allowance feature at Gulfstream Park and won a hard-fought nose decision in the 6 ½ furlongs test.

Jockey Joe Rocco, Jr. was back aboard Jordon’s Image after the same two rivals finished in reverse order, third and fourth last out, in a one-mile allowance race here on Mar,. 16, both well behind undefeated winner Gemologist. The latter goes into Saturday’s $1 million Wood Memorial (G1) at Aqueduct as the favorite for trainer Todd Pletcher, who also trains Angel’s Tune.

Jordon’s Image was a $25,000 claim at Calder from a winning maiden victory on Aug. 7 and went on to finish third in the Jack Price Juvenile at Calder and fourth in the Spectacular Bid Stakes at Gulfstream in December. Jordon’s Image paid $10.80 for $2 to win and was timed the distance in 1:18:05 over the ‘fast’ track. Tom Gregerson’s It Takes Heart finished third in the field of seven 3-year-olds, 3 ¼ lengths behind the top two.

Quote of the Day: Jockey Joe Rocco, Jr. following Jordon’s Image’s victory in the sixth race: “This meet has been a pleasant surprise. I took a risk coming here because I had a lot of good business lined up if I went to Oaklawn (Park), but it’s turned out better than I could have hoped. I’ll be at Tampa Bay Saturday and come back here and finish on Sunday. I plan on coming back next year.”

Who’s Hot: Jockey Joe Rocco, Jr. rode three winners on the card, including the sixth race allowance feature aboard Angel Quiroz’ 3-year-old gelding Jordon’s Image. The three victories brought Rocco’s total for the meet to 41 to rank eighth in the standings behind record-setting Javier Castellano as the session closes on Sunday.

Work of the Day: Rick Shanley’s 3-year-old filly Say a Novena drilled a ‘bullet’ half-mile in 48 flat Thursday morning at Calder Race Course for trainer Eddie Plesa, Jr. in her first recorded workout since finishing second in the $150,000 Forward Gal Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream on Jan. 29.

A Kentucky-bred daughter of Songandaprayer, Say a Novena had finished second in the $100,000 Old Hat Stakes (G3) on New Year’s Day here in her first start since checking in 10th behind undefeated Eclipse champion My Miss Aurelia in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) at Churchill Downs on Nov. 4.
